We’re celebrating World Ocean Day all week to raise awareness of the ocean’s importance. It honors the world’s shared oceans and their vital role in our survival.

Did you know oceans cover roughly 70% of Earth’s surface? They generate at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, house most of Earth’s biodiversity, and provide the main source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. Because the ocean also absorbs massive amounts of carbon dioxide and helps regulate global temperatures, protecting it supports the planet’s future.

Despite its vital role in our survival, the ocean faces severe, ongoing threats, including plastic pollution, habitat destruction, and ocean acidification. Millions of tons of waste enter the ocean each year, and ocean ecosystems face unprecedented cumulative pressures, primarily driven by human activity. These threats have intensified over time, and urgent action is needed now to address the most critical ones: climate change, overfishing, and pollution, which destroy vital habitats, disrupt food webs, and threaten marine biodiversity worldwide.
